In the 12 months leading up to April 2024, 40% of the UK’s energy mix came from renewables, which is an amazing feat compared to the percentage from renewables 10 years ago (2014): 10.7%. Clearly, all the hard work to change the course of our future is taking effect, and change is happening. Now more than ever, the pressure applied to the government has to maintain its momentum.
With that in mind, here are some other climate achievements from the past few years to keep up the momentum.
Carbon emission reduction
The UK has achieved a notable decrease in its overall carbon emissions. The Committee on Climate Change (CCC) reported a 15% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 compared to 2019. This reduction is attributed to the shift towards renewable energy and efficiency improvements.
Energy efficiency improvements
Investments in energy efficiency measures for homes and businesses are playing a crucial role. The government's Green Homes Grant scheme, launched in 2021, has provided homeowners with vouchers to improve insulation and install energy-saving technologies. Similar initiatives aimed at businesses, such as mandatory energy audits for large companies, are also contributing to reduced energy consumption.
Growth of low-carbon technologies
The UK is witnessing a surge in developing and deploying low-carbon technologies, such as electric vehicles and heat pumps. Sales of electric cars have seen exponential growth, with battery electric vehicles (EVs) accounting for over 30% of new car sales in the first quarter of 2024.
Government incentives like grants for EV purchases and the rollout of charging infrastructure are accelerating the transition away from gasoline-powered vehicles. Heat pump installations are also increasing, with many homeowners opting for this clean and efficient heating solution.
The UK's achievement of 40% renewable energy and other key milestones are encouraging indicators of progress on the road to net zero.
